Sonia Lather wins silver medal in Women’s World Boxing Championships
Indian boxer Sonia Lather has won the silver medal at the AIBA Women’s World Championships held in Astana, Kazakhstan. In the final match of featherweight 57kg category, she was defeated by the gold medalist Mesiano Alessia of Italy by 2-1 score. Sonia Lather was the only medal winner in this edition of tournament. In 2010, MC Mary Kom had won the gold medal in the 48kg category which was her fifth world title. In the 2016 edition of AIBA World Championships of Boxing Kazakhstan finished on top of the table with 4 gold and 2 bronze medals. China was the runners-up with 2 gold and silver medals.

AR Rahman conferred with Japan’s Fukuoka prize 2016
Legendary Oscar winning Indian music composer A R Rahman was awarded Japan’s Fukuoka prize for the year 2016. He has been conferred with this award in the Grand Prize category for his outstanding contribution towards creating, preserving and showcasing South Asian traditional fusion music. Besides, Philippines’ historian Ameth R Ocampo and Pakistani singer Yasmeen Lari have also won the 2016 Fukuoka prize in Academic and Arts and Culture categories respectively.

UNICEF to expedite operations in Greece to support migrant children
· The UN children's agency, UNICEF, has decided to scale up operations in Greece to support twenty two thousand migrant children.
· The decision was announced after a UNICEF goodwill ambassador singer Nana Mouskouri's visit to migrant facilities.
· According to UNICEF's special coordinator for the refugee crisis in Europe, the organisation will support programmes by the Greek government and other partners.
Madhavan becomes goodwill ambassador for LEPRA India
· Bollywood Actor R Madhavan has become the goodwill ambassador of LEPRA India organization that fight against diseases like leprosy and tuberculosis.· LEPRA India is a non-government organisation working in the fields of leprosy, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV or AIDS and community health.· It is also known as the Lepra Society.
· Lepra Society was registered in Hyderabad in 1989 and becomes Lepra India Trust in New Delhi in 1996.· Presently, Lepra Society is working in 54 districts of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh and since its inception has cured 3.6 lakh persons affected by leprosy and treated 67,000 patients with disabilities.
Former Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi appointed UPSC member
President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed former IPS officer Bhim Sain Bassi as a member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as per provisions of Article 316 of Constitution. He will hold the constitutional post till February 2021 i.e. maximum tenure of six years or till he attains the age of 65 years.About BS Bassi
He was an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of 1977 batch of Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre. He had started his career as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Pondicherry and retired as Delhi Police chief in February 2016. During his career spanning over 38 years he had held several important positions like Delhi Police Commissioner, Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Traffic), Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Vigilance), Inspector General of Chandigarh and DGP, Goa Police.
BRICS New Development Bank to issue first yuan-denominated bonds
· The New Development Bank of the BRICS countries is set to issue its first yuan-denominated bonds with plans to release more bonds in local currencies including in Indian Rupee.
· The Shanghai-based bank founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) and headed by eminent Indian banker M V Kamath plans to finance sustainable development projects in the emerging markets and developing countries.
·The bank's first five-year yuan-denominated bonds, also referred as green bonds, will be issued after receiving a rating from international ratings agencies as well as getting authorities' approval.
· More bonds denominated in local currencies of the BRICS countries, including the rupees in India, will be issued if the bank's board and local authorities endorse the project plans, he said.
· The New Development Bank (NDB) is established with initial subscribed capital of 50 billion US dollars with total paid-in capital of 10 billion US dollars.
· The founding members of the NDB have already brought in capital of one billion US dollars as initial contribution
