World No Tobacco Day' observed: May 31st




·  The 'World No Tobacco Day' was observed first on this day in 1987.

·  An initiative of the World Health Organisation (WHO), it encourages a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption throughout the world.

·This year the WHO has appealed for the use of plain packaging for tobacco products to reduce the "attractiveness" of such products.




All gram panchayats to have WiFi by 2018: Govt


· All gram panchayats in the country will have WiFi connectivity by October 2018 under the Bharat Net programme, a senior government official said.

· Under this programme, connectivity will be provided to the panchayats using optical fibres and radio satellites. Bharat Net will deliver WiFi to every citizen at an approximate price of Rs.100 per month, the official added.


Maharashtra central jails get community radio stations

· Central prisons in Maharashtra launched community radio stations for inmates.

·  This will help serve the jail inmates with information including counselling and entertainment programs after selecting a radio jockey from the prisoners, said Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons, Maharashtra.


·  The Central Prison at Yerwada in Pune also has a community radio.


Pakistani Singer Salma Agha to Get Overseas Citizen of India Card


·Pakistan-born Bollywood singer and actress Salma Agha will get an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card that will offer her multiple entry, multi-purpose life long visa to visit India and exemption from reporting to police.

·   As the Home Ministry took the decision to grant her OCI card, Agha met Home Minister Rajnath Singh, apparently to express her gratitude for the gesture.


· Agha had applied for the OCI card a few days ago and her application was approved after taking into consideration various aspects, officials said

FDI inflows rise 29 %


· Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows into India increased by 29 per cent to a record $40 billion during in the financial year ended March.


·  If re-invested earnings ($10 billion), other capital ($4.4 billion) and equity capital of unincorporated bodies ($1 billion) are taken into account along with $40 billion worth equity inflows, the total FDI flows in FY'16 is the highest-ever at $55.4 billion.


· The FDI equity inflows in March 2016 went up by 16.5 per cent to $2.46 billion, according to data released by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

SurajitKarPurkayastha appointed new DGP in West Bengal


·Former Kolkata Police Commissioner SurajitKarPurkayastha was appointed as the new Director General of Police in West Bengal following retirement of G M P Reddy.



· A 1985 IPS officer, Purkayastha who is at present DG (CID), will take charge of the state police tomorrow, officials said.

· He was Kolkata's police commissioner till February before being promoted ahead of the state Assembly elections.

·IPS officer Raj Kanojia, DGP (intelligence), will be the new Commandant General and DG of Home Guards in place of D P Tarenia.


Virat Kohli named T20 Player of the year, Ashwin best bowler at Ceat Award event

·  Star India batsman Virat Kohli was named Ceat T20 Player of the Year while former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award at a glittering function attended by several past and present players here.
