Union Cabinet approves setting up of India Post Payments Bank
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for setting up the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) as a Public Limited Company under the Department of Posts. It will have 100% Government of India (GOI) equity and shall be established with total expenditure of 800 Crore rupees. Now, the IPPB will obtain banking licence from RBI by March 2017 and by September 2017.

IPPB will start operations in March 2017 in about 50 districts and will cover the entire country by the end of FY 2018-19.
It will generate employment opportunities for about 3,500 skilled banking professionals, will set up 650 branches and 5,000 ATMs across the country.
Services of IPPB will be available across the country through its 650 payments bank branches. Its services will be linked post offices and alternative channels riding on modern technology including ATMs, mobiles, simple digital payments and PoS/m-PoS devices etc.
It will also generate opportunities for propagating financial literacy across the country and help furthering the cause of financial inclusion.

Rahul Johri assumes charge as first ever CEO of BCCI
·Rahul Johri assumed charge as first ever chief executive officer (CEO) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai.
· He was appointed on the recommendation of the Justice Lodha Committee.
· He will be report to the BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke and will be based at headquarters of BCCI in Mumbai.
·He will be responsible for “smooth functioning of operations, stakeholder management and building robust strategies for promoting of sport.
Sachin Tendulkar's name to be used in Kerala Government's Anti-Drug Campaign
·Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the cricket icon has given his consent to use his name to strengthen the campaign against liquor and drug abuse in the state.
· This agreement was reached when Tendulkar along with three other co-owners of the Kerala Blaste
rs Football Club (KBFC) met Vijayan at the state secretariat.
·The other co-owners of KBFC are actor-turned politician Chiranjeevi, actor Akkineni Nagarjuna and Prasad.
· Besides, KBFC also agreed to set up a residential Football Academy to train young talents in the state.
India, World Bank sign agreement for efficient bus service
Key Facts
The Efficient and Sustainable City Bus Service Project aims at improving the efficiency and attractiveness of city bus transport and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in select Indian cities.
These select demonstration cities are Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Chandigarh, Jaipur (Rajasthan) and Mira Bhayandar municipality in the Thane district of Maharashtra.
The project has been designed to specifically focus on identifying institutional, regulatory and fiscal constraints to operation of sustainable city bus services.
The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) will be the implementing agency of the GEF for the project.
The project will complement Union Government’s Bus Funding Scheme which was launched to promote public transport in cities by modernizing their bus services.
It will introduce modern Management Information Systems and Intelligent Transport Systems for better planning and management of operations.
Prime Minister releases National Disaster Management Plan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the National Disaster Management Plan (NDMP) to make India disaster resilient and reduce loss of lives. The first of its kind of national plan is based on the four priority themes of the “Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-30”.
They are (i) Understanding disaster risk
(ii) Improving disaster risk governance
(iii) Investing in disaster risk reduction (through structural and non-structural measures) and
(iv) Disaster preparedness, early warning and building back better in the aftermath of a disaster.
Salient Features of the Plan
The plan covers all phases of disaster management: prevention, response, mitigation and recovery. It provides for vertical and horizontal integration among all the Government agencies and departments.
It also spells out the roles and responsibilities of all levels of Government right up to Urban Local Body (ULB) and Panchayat level in a matrix format. The plan has a regional approach, which will be beneficial for disaster management and also for development planning.
It has been designed in such a way that it can be implemented in all phases of disaster management in a scalable manner.
The plan also identifies major activities such as early warning, medical care, information dissemination, fuel, search and rescue, transportation, evacuation, etc. to serve as a checklist for agencies responding to a disaster.
It also provides a generalized framework for recovery and offers flexibility to assess a situation and build back better. It emphasizes on a greater need for Information, Education and Communication activities to prepare communities to cope with disasters.
The plan incorporates provisions for strengthening disaster risk governance and lays down six thematic areas. They are integrated and mainstream disaster risk reduction, promoting participatory approach, capacity development, working with elected representatives, grievance redress mechanism and promoting quality standards, certification and awards for disaster risk management.
