Make in India Week: 3 MoUs worth Rs 21000 crore signed

Three Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) envisaging total investment of 21,000 crore rupees were signed on the first day of the Make in India Week in Mumbai, Maharashtra. These MoUs were signed in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.





Banaras Hindu University turns 100 years 



Banaras Hindu University (BHU) founded by Freedom fighter Pt Madan Mohan Malviya has turned 100 years on 13th February 2016. BHU was founded as important seat of higher education in 1916. During time of its establishment it was first university in India that was the result of a private individual’s efforts.







For first time Scientists discover Gravitational Waves 


Scientist for the first time have discovered Gravitational Waves (GW) that were hypothesised by Albert Einstein in 1916. These waves were detected by the scientists working at two LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) facilities in United States.

Vilas Tonapi appointed as Director of IIMR

Dr. Vilas A. Tonapi has been appointed as Director of Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR). Prior to this appointment, he was working as the Principal Scientist at Seed Science and Technology of the IIMR.

Malayalam poet O N V Kurup passes away

Noted Malayalam poet and lyricist O N V Kurup passed away in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was 84. He was popularly known as “ONV”, Ottaplakkal Nambiyadikkal Velu Kurup and had made significant contributions to the Malayalam film music. He was also was part of the progressive movement in Kerala.

Indian Ambassador to Tajikistan Biraja Prasad passes away 

 India’s Ambassador to Tajikistan Biraja Prasad passed away following a massive cardiac arrest. He was the youngest Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer to be appointed as India’s Ambassador to any country.

Wipro buys HealthPlan Services 

India’s third largest IT exporter Wipro Limited has acquired US based healthcare technology firm HealthPlan Services for US 460 million dollars. This acquisition was part of the Wipro’s traditional “string of pearls” acquisition strategy and it shall help company to strengthen its position in the US health insurance market.

Joshna Chinappa wins gold medal in women’s individual squash at SAG 

India’s ace squash player Joshna Chinappa has won the gold medal in women’s individual category at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG). In the final match played at R G Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, she defeated Pakistan’s Maria Wazir by 10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 score. With this she became first Indian squash player to win individual gold medal in 2016 SAG.

National Framework for Malaria Elimination 2016-2030 released 

 Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has released the National Framework for Malaria Elimination (NFME) 2016-2030 at New Delhi. The framework aims to eliminate mosquito borne malaria disease from the country by 2030. This is for the first time government’s health policy has framed intervention have deliverables and time-bound targets.

Railway Ministry launches 3 IT enabled apps 

 The Union Ministry of Railways has launched 3 IT (Information Technology) enabled apps to bring transparency in Indian Railways on the sidelines of Digital India initiative. These app projects were launched by Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu at through Video-Conferencing from Rail Bhawan at a function held in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

India ranks 37th in USCC’s 2016 Intellectual Property Index

 In recently released Intellectual Property Index (IPI) by United States Chamber of Commerce (USCC), India was ranked 37th among the surveyed 38 countries. These 38 countries benchmarked in the 2016 index accounts for nearly 85% of the global GDP. Venezuela ranked lowest below India at 38th position with 6.42 points on the index.

February 10: National Deworming Day 

Every year on 10 February is observed as National Deworming Day to combat parasitic worm infections among preschool and school-age children across India. This year it is second edition of the observance of this day after it was launched in 2015 by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

Karnataka Mobile One m-governance model wins gold at World Government Summit 

 Karnataka’s flagship mobile-one governance application has won gold medal at the fourth World Government Summit in Dubai, UAE in the m-governance awards category. On behalf of state government, Karnataka’s e-governance secretary Srivatsa Krishna received the award.

World’s Largest Concentrated Solar Plant Opened in Morocco 

 The first phase of the world’s largest concentrated solar power (CSP) plant was launched in the Souss-Massa-Drâa area in Morocco. It is part of Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex which will produce enough energy for more than one million Moroccan households on completion by 2018.
