  • Noted Children’s Book Writer Kamala Laxman passes away

A noted writer of children’s books Kamala Laxmanpassed away on 14 November 2015 in Pune. She was 90.
She was widow of legendary cartoonist R K Laxman who was best known for his creation The Common Man for his daily cartoon strip You Said Itin the daily The Times of India.

About Kamala Laxman

  • Laxman was born in Chennai and had graduated from Delhi’s Indraprastha College. She had studied interior decoration from Sir JJ School of Arts in Mumbai.
  • She was the second wife of R.K. Laxman. Incidentally, his first wife was also known as Kamala who was renowned Bharatnatyam danseuse and movie star. They were divorced in 1960.
  • Notable Children books: The Thama StoriesRaman of Tenali & Other Stories,Thama and His Missing Mother etc.
  • Her Tenali Raman stories were serialised into 13 episodes and were telecasted on Doordarshan.
  • She was commissioned to write a series for children by the India Book House in the 1970s.

  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Ambedkar memorial in London

On this occasion, Prime Minister unveiled a plaque to mark the dedication of the Memorial and was accompanied by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
  • Maharashtra government had bought this house in London where social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar had stayed as a student in the 1920s.
  • In September 2015, Maharashtra Government had purchased the house for 32 crore rupees and had converted into an international memorial consisting of a public museum and a library owing to its cultural and national importance and pride of millions of people of India.
Apart from it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also unveiled a Basaveshwara Statue at Lambeth in London. Basaveshwara (1105-1167 AD) was a great philosopher and social reformer who had fought against social evils of his time, and worked for the strengthening of democracy at the grassroots.
Basaveshwara’s life and ideas are narrated in the sacred text Basava purana of the south Indian Hindu Lingayat community. He was known for Bhakti movement in south India in 12th century AD.

  • Saina Nehwal wins silver medal at 2015 China Open

In the final match played at the Haixia Olympic Sports Centre in Fuzhou, the defending champion and top seeded Saina lost to sixth placed Xuerui Lifrom China by 12-21, 15-21 score.
Saina and Li had met 12 times against each other and Saina has won just 2 of those games. The final of China Open tournament was overall Saina’s fifth final of the year 2015 and the third instance in 2015 that the World No. 1 has come out second best.
Note: In year 2014, India’s Srikanth Kidambi and Saina Nehwal had created history by winning 2014 China Open in Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles category respectively.

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg from Germany has won the 2015 Brazilian Grand Prix title of Formula One (F1) held at Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Socorro district of Sao Paulo.
It was Rosberg’s overall thirteenth championship title of F1 in his career and the fifth win in the 2015 season after Spain, Monaco, Australian and Mexican Grand Prix.

  • Terrorist attack in - Paris

Maximum number of deaths were noticed in the Bataclan concert venue. Around 80000 football fans in the Stade de France came under the deadliest attacks while they were watching a friendly match between Germany and France.
France President Francois Hollande declared a state of emergency soon after the attack. He was also present at the spot during the attack.
The emergency orders enables the authorities to close public places and impose curfews and restrictions on the movement of traffic and people.
This was the deadliest violence in France after World War II and the after the “Charlie Hebdo Shooting in 2015 

  • Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson retires from International cricket

He made this announcement after conclusion to the second Test match against New Zealand at WACA.
With this, he has joined his fellow team mates who had recently retired from international cricket includingMichael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Chris Rogers and Shane Watson.

About Mitchell Johnson

  • Born: 2 November 1981 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia.
  • Test Career: He had made his international test debut in 2007 against Sri Lanka. He had overall played 73 test matches.
  • In his test career, he had scored 2,036 runs at a batting average of 22.35 and his top score was 123 (not out). He had scored one century and 11 half centuries.
  • He had bowled 15,409 balls in his test career and had taken 311 runs at bowling average of 28.1.
  • He ranks fourth in the list all-time Test wickets of Australia after Dennis Lillee (355), Glenn McGrath (563) and Shane Warne (708).
  • ODI Career: He had made his ODI debut in 2005 against New Zealand and had played 153 ODI matches.
  • In his ODI career, he had scored 951 at an average of 16.12, with to score of 73 runs.
  • He had bowled 7,066 balls and had taken 239 wickets at an average of 25.3.
  • World Cup: He had played a key role in the final match of 2015 ICC World Cup which had led to Australia to win the World Cup for the record 5th time.
  • Awards and Honours: International Cricket Council’s (ICC’s) Cricketer of the Year award in 2009 and 2014. ICC’s Test Player of the year in 2014.

  • VHP leader Ashok Singhal passes away

Senior Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Ashok Singhal passed away in Gurgaon, Haryana. He was 90 and was suffering from serious respiratory problems.
Singhal was a bachelor and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak all his life and was the prominent leader of temple movement in Ayodhya i.e. Ramjanmabhoomi movement.

About Ashok Singhal

  • Born: 15 September 1926 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
  • In 1950, he had completed his bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Benaras Hindu University Institute of Technology.
  • After graduation, he became a full time pracharak of right-wing RSS and in 1980, he was deputed as leader of VHP and became its joint general secretary.
  • Singhal had served as an international working President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for over 20 years.
  • He was a key organiser of the first VHP Dharma Sansad which was held in 1984 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. This Sansad had given birth to Ramjanmabhoomi temple movement.

  • Chia Hung Lu has won the World Junior Badminton Championships

With this feat, Verma joined the ranks of R.M.V. Gurusaidutt, Sameer Verma, Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu and H.S. Prannoy to win medals for India in the World junior championships.
He is also the first Indian player to win the Badminton Asia Youth Championships in 2013.
