      Puducherry today observed De Jure Transfer Day with pomp and gaiety. It was on this day in 1962 French colonies of Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe were formally acceded to the Indian Union

      Lt. Governor KiranBedi unfurled the nation flag at the monument for freedom struggle at Keezhur opening the celebrations.

     It was in this village a referendum on whether to merge with India was held way back in 1954. Of the 178 representatives who participated in the voting, 170 voted in favour of merger.

     Chief Minister paid rich tributes to freedom fighters who toiled for the cause of freedom from colonial rule.

           Joao Havelange, former president of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA),            the global governing body of football passed away in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

          He was 100. He had served as president of FIFA for two decades and had played pivotal role in           transforming football’s governing body into a multibillion-dollar business.

          Born as Jean-Marie Faustin Godefroid de Havelange on 8 May 1916 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

         He was a Brazilian lawyer, businessman and former athlete. He had served as the 7th President            of the FIFA from 1974 to 1998.

         His tenure as President in FIFA is the second longest behind only that of Jules Rimet. He had               received the title of Honorary President when leaf office, but resigned in April 2013.

         Havelange had expanded the FIFA World Cup from 16 to 32 teams and made it one of sport’s              most important events. 

         He had organized six World Cups as FIFA president from 1974 to 1998, when Sepp Blatter                  replaced him. He is credited for creating the women’s World Cup.

        He was re-elected president of FIFA for six times, capitalising on his contact-building across               world football. Under his presidentship, FIFA’s membership had expanded by nearly one-third to          more than 200 nations and territories.

        He had served as member of International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1963 until 2011. He           was the longest-serving active member of IOC upon his resignation.

            Bihar State Legislature on Tuesday ratified the Constitution Amendment Bill on Goods and Services Tax (GST) in a special one-day session.

      With this, it has become the first non-BharatiyaJanata Party ruled state to ratify the GST.
      The GST Bill needs to be ratified by at least 15 state legislatures before the President can notify the GST Council, which will then decide the new tax rate and other issues.

      The government intends to reach the golden number of 15 states in the coming month.
      Last week, Assam became the first state to ratify the Bill.As reported earlier, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had called Finance Minister ArunJaitley last week and offered to have the Bill passed on August 16.



Goa hosting BRICS in October this year

     The coastal state of Goa has been given the opportunity to host the BRICS summit ahead of other states because of its high hospitality standards, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has said.

      The BRICS summit will be held in Goa in mid-October.

      Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was in Goa last week to review preparations for the meet, which is expected to be attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

      Parsekar also said that Goa should capitalise on the state's tourism potential.

     China has successfully launched the world’s first quantum satellite dubbed as Quantum Experiments at Space Scaler         (QUESS) satellite. The satellite was launched on board of Long March-2D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite                           LauncCentre in the remote northwestern province of Gansu. 
      Key Features The QUESS satellite has been nicknamed as Micius after a 5th century BC Chinese philosopher.
      It will be located in sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 km and will circle the Earth once every 90 minutes.
 
     The satellite will help China to establish hack-proof communications system by transmitting uncrackable keys from         space to the ground. Applications: Ranges from highly secured military and government communications to online           shopping.
    Significance Earlier, researchers around the world had successfully sent quantum messages on land. But this first of its       kind satellite-based quantum network would make it possible to send quickly encrypted (hack proof) messages around     the world.
    It also opens door to other possible uses of the technology. 
    The launch is also a major triumph for China in the field of quantum technology. 

    What is Quantum communication? Quantum communication boasts ultra-high security communication.
   It uses subatomic particles to securely communicate between two points. In case intruder (hacker) tries to crack the            message in Quantum communication, it will change its form in a way that would alert the sender and cause the message    to be altered or deleted.
   Note: Chinese philosopher Micius has been credited for conducting optical experiments.

Govt services to be available through mobile app in Maharashtra: CM Fadnavis

     .      Maharashtra Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis announced that all government services will be made available through mobile app in the state and said that the people will get the feeling of his secretariat in their mobile.

     He was addressing the main Independence Day function after unfurling the national flag at Mantralaya in Mumbai.

        He greeted the people of Maharashtra and saluted the martyrs of the freedom struggle. He said, today is the day of resolution and presented the brief picture of the achievements of his government during last 22 months.

       He said, his government has provided assistance of 9000 crore rupees to the farmers during last two years to face drought related crisis.

      He added that the government managed to make 4000 villages drought-free with the help of JalayuktaShivarAbhiyan. 

     He expressed confidence to make 2000 more villages drought free during this year.

Sikkim govt commitment to total literacy by 2019: CM Chamling




           In Sikkim, the people celebrated 70th Independence Day in grand manner. The Medals and state Meritorious Service Awards have also been conferred during a state level function in Gangtok today.

           The Chief Minister, Pawan Chamling has unfurled the National tricolour at Palzor Stadium and took salute of jawans from Sikkim police and other paramilitary forces on the occasion.

            He also reiterated his government commitment to declare Sikkim a total literate state by the year 2019.

           Mr. Chamling in his speech termed Sikkim as an exemplary state for promoting secularism in true sense and claimed that every religion, faith and belief is protected here.

PM announces 20% hike in freedom fighters' pension



            Addressing the nation on the occasion of India's 70th Independence Day, Prime Minister NarendraModi announced a 20% increase in the pension of freedom fighters.

            He also announced that the Government of India will bear medical expenses of 1 lakh for poor families. Modi said the government has also delivered on the promise of One Rank One Pension (OROP).

        US President Barack Obama issued a disaster declaration for flood-devastated Louisiana. White House said, emergency workers have rescued more than 7,000 residents stranded in homes and cars.

          Officials said, the action makes emergency federal funding available to support rescue crews working nonstop as deadly flooding ravages the state, disastrous weather that has left at least three dead and one missing.

           The flooding submerged large parts of the region on Sunday, three days after water-swelled streams and rivers began rising. Local, state and national agencies have been working together to rescue residents.

Putting an end to a 92-year-old tradition of the colonial era, the railway Budget will be merged with the general Budget from 2017-18 onwards. 

    The move will come as a relief to the national transporter, which, until now, has been reeling under an additional burden of Rs 40,000 crore from higher salaries, following implementation of the 7th Pay Commission.

It also has to bear close to RsRs 35,000 crore of subsidy burden. If the merger goes through, the Railways will get rid of the annual dividend it has to pay for gross budgetary support from the government.

      Union Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Union government will set up five electronic manufacturing clusters in Andhra Pradesh including Tirupati and Sri in Chittoor district and Anantapur where it is in final stage.

·         The Union Minister held a high-level official meeting with the authorities of NIC, UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), C.DOT and STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in Tirupati on Saturday.

·         Speaking to media on the occasion, Mr Prasad said that in Tirupati cluster, where 30 electronic companies are operating, in total made a business of 80 crore rupees, while at national level 41,000 crore rupees was exported.

·         Stating that the State of Andhra Pradesh is doing well with regard to IT and ITES, he said that NarendraModi government has also taken up application of technology to espouse the cause of poor by bringing in transparency.

           Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi today called on Prime Minister NarendraModi and held talks with his counterpart SushmaSwaraj during which India's bid for membership of the NSG is understood to have figured among other regional and bilateral issues.

·         Wang and Swaraj also discussed issues relating to annual BRICS summit which will be hosted by India in Goa in           October.
           Wang had arrived in Goa yesterday on a three-day visit to India. He had met Goa Chief Minister LaxmikantParsekar and discussed about preparations for the BRICS summit.

      After Punjab National Bank and the United Bank of India, more banks are likely to start a facility wherein an account holder can electronically verify his income tax returns (ITR) without having a netbanking account, the Central Board of Direct Taxes has said. This e-verification facility was used by over 75.3 lakh taxpayers till August 5, latest data revealed.

      Government has approved Rs 1,911-crore highway projects for six states, including Karnataka and Maharashtra.

·         The standing finance committee (SFC) has approved six road projects in Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh to be built at a cost of an estimated Rs 1,910.87 crore.

·         The official said SFC approved the NH 61 stretch in Nagaland for an estimated Rs 343 crore, besides         upgradation of Rayachoti-Kadapa stretch on NH 18 for an estimated Rs 350 crore in Andhra Pradesh.
