 Odisha becomes first Indian state to give pension and food benefits to transgenders 


Image result for pension and food benefits to transgendersIn the first week of June 2016 Odisha became the first Indian state to give transgender people social welfare benefits, such as a pension, housing and food grains.
State Odisha took this step with the aim to give the transgender community the same benefits as those living below the poverty line. 
This step is also aimed at improving their overall social and economic status.

Garbine Muguruza won 2016 French Open Women’s Singles tennis title

Garbine Muguruza of Spain won the French Open Women’s Singles tennis title for the first time at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, France.
Garbine Muguruza, at the age of 22 grab this Grand Slam title by defeating Serena Williams of the USA in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 in the final match.
After this win, Muguruza also became the first Spanish woman to win a Grand Slam title since Sanchez-Vicario in Paris in 1998.

• Tennis player Garbine Muguruza, is a Venezuelan-Spanish professional who represents Spain in tennis competitions and turned professional in 2012. 
• Muguruza has won total three singles titles, most notably the 2016 French Open where she beat world number one Serena Williams in the final.

International No Diet Day - 6 May

 International No Diet Day (INDD) is an annual celebration of body acceptance, including fat acceptance and body shape diversity on May 6th.
This day is also dedicated to promoting a healthy life style with a focus on health at any size and in raising awareness of the potential dangers of dieting and the unlikelihood of success.


Lok Sabha passes the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Bill 2016


·        The Lok Sabha passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Bill 2016. The bill is being seen as a transformational legislation that will help in improving India’s ranking in the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ index.

·        The Bill is based on the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2015 chaired by Bhupender Yadav.

·        The committee submitted the report to government on 28 April 2016.




India rated 9th in FDI Confidence Index


·        India has secured ninth position in the 2016 Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index.

·        The ranking has been released by a global management consulting firm named AT Kearney.

·        The firm has underlined that the country is “finally” embarking on a growth path that will see it “unlock its full potential”. India jumped two places to rank number 9 in this year’s AT Kearney Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index.

·        India has emerged as the fastest growing economy in the world, surpassing China as well as Brazil, Russia and South Africa, the other members of BRICS.
·        The US and China hold top two positions for fourth straight year. Canada ranked at third position. Germany secured fourth position. The UK, Japan, Australia and France secured the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth position respectively. Singapore secured the tenth position.
