World Environment Day-June 5

·  World Environment Day is observed on June 5 to encourage global awareness and initiate positive action to protect nature.

·The day was established by the United Nations along with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1972.

· This year, the UN's theme is "the fight against the illegal trade in wildlife" with the slogan, "Go Wild for Life"



Chief Minister of Haryana lays foundation stone of ‘Jai jawan awas Yojana’


· The Chief Minister of Haryana, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, the Chief of Army Staff, General Dalbir Singh and other dignitaries at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Jai Jawan Awas Yojna (JJAY), in Bahadurgarh, Haryana.

· Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar laid the foundation stone of Jai Jawan Awas Yojna  in Bahadurgarh city Haryana.

·Khattar was accompanied by Army Chief General Dalbir Singh and Western Army Commander Lieutenant General K.J. Singh.

· The project is being executed by Army Welfare Housing Organization and aims to provide low-cost housing


ATM-based validation of tax returns activated

·        The Income Tax (I-T) Department has launched an ATM-based validation system for online filing of income tax returns.


·        Under the initiative, the electronic verification code needed to validate returns on the e-filing portal of the I-T department can be generated through the ATM where the taxpayer has an account.

·        Currently, only SBI has initiated the facility, an I-T official said.



IMF approves $1.5 Billlion Loan for Sri Lanka


· The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) executive board has approved a three-year $1.5 billion loan to support Sri Lanka’s economic reform agenda which is hit by a balance-of-payments crisis.


·        Aimed at boosting government revenues to reduce the fiscal deficit, improving foreign exchange reserves, reducing public debt and Sri Lanka’s risk of debt distress, and improving public financial management



Muguruza beats Serena to win her 1st Grand Slam


·        Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza won her maiden Grand Slam title after defeating the defending champion Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 in the French Open finals.



·        The fourth-seeded 22-year-old Spaniard has won only two WTA singles titles in her career, while the 34-year-old American had won six Australian Open, three French Open, six Wimbledon and six US Open titles in her career.

Sulabha Deshpande passes away at 79


·  Veteran film, theatre and television actress Sulabha Deshpande passed away on Saturday at the age of 79 at her residence in Mumbai.

·She was considered among those spearheading the experimental theatre movement in the 1970s. Some of her works include the films 'English Vinglish' and 'Gaman'.

·  She won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987 for her contribution to theatre
