A.18 April: World Heritage Day
1.Every year World Heritage Day is being observed across the world on April 18. It is also known as International Day for Monuments and Sites.2.Objective: To create consciousness to preserve and protect the precious assets and cultural heritage across the world.
3.It marks the need of shielding the historical monuments and sites located in every part of the world by making joint efforts at international level.
4.2016 Theme: ‘The Heritage of Sport’. It was decided by the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in the backdrop of Rio Olympics 2016 to be hosted in August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
6.Background The first world Heritage Day observed on April 18, 1982 by the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Tunisia.
7.It was approved in 1983 by UNESCO. The aim of this day is to make people aware about several awareness camps are organized across the world to protect the precious assets and cultural heritage across the world.
B.Dipa Karmakar became first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics
1.Indian artistic gymnast Dipa Karmakar has created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics.2.She achieved this feat after her strong performance at the final qualifying which helped her to book 2016 Rio Olympics Games berth to be held in August 2016.
3.In the test event, she earned a total score of 52.698 points in the artistic gymnastics event. She has been listed as the 79th gymnast in the list of women’s artistic gymnasts who have qualified for the Rio Olympics.
About Dipa Karmakar
1.Born on 9 August 1993 in Agartala, Tripura.
2.At 2014 Commonwealth Games held at Glasgow she had created history becoming the first Indian female gymnast to win medal (bronze) in history of the games.
3.She also had won a bronze medal at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and had finished fifth at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
4.She is also one of the five women who have successfully landed on very difficult Produnova vault in competition.
C.Geeta Johri appointed as first woman DGP of Gujarat
1.Gujarat government has appointed senior IPS officer Geeta Johri as the Director General of Police (DGP) of the state.2.With this she became the first female DGP of Gujarat. Her appointment comes after she was elevated to the post after the state DGP PC Thakur was transferred to centre as the Director General (DG) of Civil Defence and Home Guards on deputation.
About Geeta Johri
1.She is IPS officer of the 1982 batch of Gujarat Cadre. She holds the distinction of being Gujarat’s first women IPS officer.
2.She had started her policing career in 1982 in Ahmedabad and later was posted to Gandhinagar and Vadodara.
3.She catapulted in to fame after taking on mafia don Abdul Latif by raiding his den in Popatiawad at Dariapur and arrested his gunman Sharif Khan in September 1992.
4.Earlier in April 2015, she was promoted from the rank of Additional DGP (ADGP) to Director General of Police after the CBI court had dropped charges against her in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.
D.Nico Rosberg wins 2016 Chinese Grand Prix
1.Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg from Germany has won the 2016 Chinese Grand Prix held at the Shanghai International Circuit.2.Chinese Grand Prix title race was the third race of the 2016 season of Formula One in which total 11 teams had participated.
3.It was Rosberg’s overall seventeenth championship title of F1 in his career and the third consecutive win in the 2016 season.
